Check out Jamie Russo’s new podcast interviewing Liz Elam, entrepreneur and curator of Link Coworking!

In this Episode, we get the juicy download from Liz Elam on the Global Coworking Conference Unconference recently hosted in Australia.

Liz is a well-known veteran of the coworking industry. She opened her first Link Coworking space in Austin in 2010 and her second location shortly after. She was a founding member of LEXC, the League of Extraordinary Coworking spaces, and its president for the first two years. She was also the driving force behind CoShare, the industry’s association. And she took over GCUC several years ago and is driving it’s major global expansion. Liz has her finger on the pulse of coworking and where it’s going and often gets quoted by the press. Speaking of the press, in her spare time, she writes for entrepreneur.com.

In our conversation, Liz shares what most surprised her about GCUC Australia, GCUC expansion plans and where she thinks coworking will go in the next 5 years.

Clearpoint Counsel Article on GCUC & Coworking’s Future

OMG+WHAT+IS+THE+BIGGEST+THREAT+TO+THE
Please use the LExC visa on LiquidSpace.com to access spaces across the LExC network.

The GCUC Co Working Conference Unconference took place amidst the bright lights of Vivid Sydney madness last week.  People from all over Australia, US, China and even Middle Earth attended for a robust discussion about the future of work and co working. Not surprisingly co working spaces and future co working spaces were represented in great numbers, peppered by the curiousity of real estate agents, government leaders, authors and the odd co working member. International guests included the energetic Liz Elam from GCUC USA, China’s co-working superstar Bob Zheng (People Squared), dynamic kiwi Nick Shewring (BizDojo), the inspiring Mike LaRosa GCUC (Europe, SE Asia and USA) and the engaging Jeff Johnson (Liquidspace).

Hosted by Hub Australia CEO, Brad Krauskopf, Day 1 sessions covered the future of work, designing for accelerated serendipity, cutting edge data on co working, intersection of government, corporates with co working, optimising co working through technology, “extreme real estate” and everything in between. Many collaborative collisions occurred during coffee, tea, and muffin breaks. We were even treated to Happy Hour and personal signings from Matthew Dunston for his Book Launch “The Co Working Revolution”.  Day 2 we unconferenced, bus toured our way around Sydney ending at the famous Hub Sydney’s “wine down”…….

5 THINGS WE LEARNED AT WORKTECH 15 NEW YORK

On May 13 and 14, we joined hundreds of other workplace experts for WORKTECH 15 New York to explore the latest thinking on the future of work and the workplace. Below, we’ve rounded up five of our favorite conversations that took place over the two days of masterclasses and presentations. To stay apprised of future WORKTECH events, click here, and stay tuned for coverage on this site about upcoming WORKTECH conferences around the globe.

1. The workplace is a huge opportunity for us to make an impact on the health and well-being of employees

Jamie Russo, the chief of work and wellness at Enerspace Coworking, and the president of the League of Extraordinary Coworking Spaces, gave a Masterclass presentation about what corporations can learn from coworking communities.

“We spend 32 percent of our days sleeping, 36 percent working, 10 percent on leisure and sports, 9 percent ‘other’, and 5 percent caring for others,” said Russo, indicating just what an impact it’d have on our lives if our workplace helped us to be healthier.

As for what approaches corporations can steal from coworking spaces, Russo said that “coworking spaces are designed to support and attract a variety of people. They’re not designed with a corporate real estate budget in mind.” In other words: Design your workplace for people—your living, breathing, human employees—and you’ll be on the right track….

To kick off last week’s Global Coworking Unconference Conference in Berkeley, Ca., Tony Bacigalupo, co-founder of New Work City, posed a question: Who thinks coworking means dividing up office space to sell at a profit? Not a hand went up. He then asked those who think coworking is something more than that to raise their hand. Nearly every hand in the room shot up, accompanied by cheers, shouts, and hollers of approval. And with that, we launched into three days of community building, information sharing, and planning around coworking.

The recurring themes of this year’s GCUC (pronounced “juicy”), hosted by NextSpace Berkeley, were community, colearning, creating alliances, and a notion that is at the heart of GCUC: that those within the coworking community are collaborators, not competitors.

In just 10 years, coworking has grown from a temporary space in San Francisco, complete with card tables and a few chairs, to over 3,000 spaces around the world. A GCUC participant from Japan told an unconference session that there are now over 300 coworking spaces in Tokyo alone……

GCUC Berkeley, Are You Attending? LEXC is, and so should you!!!

GCUC 2015
Please use the LExC visa on LiquidSpace.com to access spaces across the LExC network.

Are you attending the 2015 GCUC Conference?  You should be!

GCUC explores and supports the Coworking movement. At GCUC attendees will learn about design, technology, community, marketing, branding, real estate and financing. We’ll dive into new research on the industry and debate the future of work. Sounds like a lot? Well it is, but we’ll pull it off in an inspiring space surrounded by industry leaders. You should join us!

Still not convinced?

Here’s 5 more reasons why you should attend (thank you GCUC):

Reason Number 1:

You’ll be the first to hear the results of the Coworking survey

What’s that you say? Show us the numbers? Ok, then! GCUC has partnered with our buddies at Emergent Research on a new survey all about the effectiveness of networking in coworking spaces. That’s right, in addition to all those great traditional coworking stats, we’re on a mission to prove without a doubt that “Accelerated Serendipity” exists!

Reason Number 2:

Camp GCUC – an all day primer on opening a coworking space

New to coworking? In the process of opening your first space? Just want to learn more? Fear not! Camp GCUC is your one stop shop on all things Technology, Design, Real Estate and Branding!

Reason Number 3:

The Unconference allows anyone to be a speaker!

What does that mean exactly? Well…exactly what it says. The coolest part of an unconference is the ability for every attendee to fully participate in engaging conversations with each other, rather than sitting in an auditorium being talked to for hours on end. No matter whether this is your first time coming to GCUC or you have been every year, the opportunity to engage and connect with your coworking peers is second to none!

Reason Number 4:

Where else are you going to meet hundreds of other people into coworking?

The GCUC team can always tell who’s at their first coworking event, because the look on their faces is priceless! We often hear attendees exclaiming: “There are other people like me!” and it’s true! Too often are we stuck in the daily grind of managing our own spaces – this is an opportunity to meet owner/operators from all over the world!

Reason Number 5:

You get to hear the story behind the word Coworking from the man that chose it.

Before 2005, the word “coworking” didn’t even exist. We wanted to find the origins of the word and were delighted by what we discovered. Brad Neuberg will share it with us Thursday morning!

Come join LEXC members at the Global Coworking Unconference Conference (GCUC) in Berkeley, just across the bay from San Francisco. GCUC will be the biggest gathering of Coworking peeps in the US!

If you’ve ever wondered what other coworking spaces look like, here’s your chance: GCUC, using a new conference/unconference format, will provide the opportunity to tour over 25 coworking spaces, and more!

Check out all the LEXC members attending!
